The History of M.A.T.S.S. and Our Directors

In the mid-1980's, four mothers with young children became disenchanted with the gymnastics programs available for youngsters in Nassau County. They could not find suitable programs for their toddler, pre-nursery, and pre-kindergarten children.

They decided they should start their own gym. Pooling money together, the four mothers bought two blue mats and began giving classes in a local American Legion Hall.

In one month, they outgrew their location and formally started M.A.T.S.S. Kids’ Gym in 1985. Our two remaining founders, Nancy Wohlsen and Nancy Clinton, own and operate our two locations in Syosset and Bellmore.

Unlike many other gymnastics and tumbling programs, M.A.T.S.S. provides a stress-free environment for kids.

As we've evolved into certified child development centers, our staff has grown and become fully trained and certified, as well, with nearly all of us earning degrees in either physical education, early childhood development, elementary education, or business administration.

For more than 35 years, M.A.T.S.S. Kids' Gym and Early Childhood Education Centers has been the place to go for early education, gymnastics, birthday parties, and so much more.

We are Long Island's original non-competitive gym, and a wonderful nurturing environment for your child to learn and grow.

We have two older kids graduated from MATSS in the past several years and will send in the youngest one this fall. MATSS is such a nice place. They have professional teachers who truly love and care about the children. There are also plenty of gym facilities. It is such a bless especially for rainy days and winter days. I like their daycare program 8-6 daily with very few days off. No doubt that it is a rescue for working parents. I've recommended MATSS to many of my friends. Nancy, Kimmy, Kathy, and many other teachers are more like a family member to me. I wish MATSS will continue its success. All the best.
